The Hidden Tree

I have some very exciting news! Marianne and I have discovered some hidden whispering leaves and books inside the Whispering Library, we spent two weeks during the summer reading under the trees there. The oak spirit, and caretaker of the library, even gave us two large moss pillows for the moss chairs so that we could spend the night reading by the moonlight.

One night Marianne noticed that something strange was going on, she claimed that she had seen a tree moving, from one row of trees to another. I didn't believe her and laughed, but then I felt like someone was stepping on my toes and I cried out loud! Marianne grabbed onto something, but I couldn't see what it was she was hanging on to. I could see her trembling in the grass; it looked like something was strangling her. I desperately tried to come to her rescue, but I couldn't see or feel anything. The Oak Sprite had been sleeping, we could hear him snoring, but now he was awake, and there was a loud sound of whistling leaves coming towards us. Then a strong light was turned on, and I clearly saw what Marianne was fighting against. It was a grey tree with nasty thorns on the branches and trunk.  Marianne had scratches all over her face, and her arms were bleeding. The light had scared the tree; it gave up the fight, and tried to retreat to hide in the shadow. We could hear something moving through the ground beneath us, strong green roots jumped out of the ground, and grabbed the grey tree by its roots. Then the tree was thrown from one side to another until it had lost all its leaves. The trunk was broken in half and revealed a pile of books hidden inside the trunk.

We were both in shock; I had never seen a human bleed before! It was a terrible sight. I had no idea what to do, but in a few minutes Marianne was on her feet again, she asked for her handbag and pulled out a box containing some strange paper. The paper had glue on the bag side, and she placed the paper over the worst scratches. I had never seen a patch before, but Marianne assured me that it would help in healing the scratches. In my opinion she should have gone straight to a shaman and asked for some proper healing!

I had never seen a tree like the grey tree before, it didn't look like any trees growing here in Leafenheim, but Marianne had seen trees like this in the human world where they call them Honey Locust.

I had a suspicion that someone had been trying to hide information inside the Whispering Library. My search for information about Queen Agrafina only resulted in very little, but there had to be more information somewhere. We did not dare to ask the Oak spirit permission to go through all the leaves and books dropped by the grey tree, but much to our surprise the pleasant Oak voice gently asked us to go through the leaves and books to find out what the tree had been hiding!

Most of the leaves were about a long forgotten tribe of fairies called the Mulinn Alfs that I never had heard about before. According to the whispering leaves this tribe of fairies had been the first tribe to leave Valhalla, and the house called Alfheim. It was at that time the God Frey had decided to send the fairies over the rainbow bridge Bifrost into the human world. This was long before the Apple Fairies of Nidlongdir ever existed and before the word fairy had been thought of. At the time the Mulinn Alfs left Valhalla they were spirits of nature, given a body and mind by the gods to make it possible for them to live in Midgard, the land of the humans. Unlike most other Alf tribes the Mulinn Alfs lived among the creatures of night. Other Alf tribes founded Alfenheim, a golden city on the border of Midgard and Valhalla, beside the bridge Bifrost.  Later in the history of Nidlongdir an Apple Fairy called Myrkur, who was one of the first twelve fairies found inside an apple by an old woman, and founder of Apple Hold Castle, married one of the seven Shooting Star Princesses called Tindra from the Mulinn Alf tribe. He became the leader of the Nattdis Fairies who settled down on some remote islands in the Mist. One of the islands was called the Cloud Island and in present time it is the home of Queen Agrafina's Mother.

Among the books we found the most magical journal I had ever seen. The cover was soft and looked like black velvet, with a motive of the starry night sky. It had no lock, but it was impossible for us to open, when we tried it was like forcing a very heavy gate to open. I tried to open the journal with some of the spells I know, but none of them worked. Marianne also gave up on the journal, but The Oak Spirit asked me to take my place in a white chair at the entrance of the library. I had never used this chair because there are no trees with whispering leaves within reach of this seat. As I sat down in the chair I had a strange device placed in front of my eyes. I think the humans call this device glasses, but Marianne said that they were not like any glasses she ever had seen, because they kind of snapped onto my face. They made my eyes look like globes floating in front of my face. The glass eyes started to spin very fast; the spinning of the glass eyes slowed down after a little while, and I started to read out loud from the still closed journal resting in my lap.

The Diary of Queen Agrafina

I dedicate this journal to my daughter Agrafina and Queen of the Apple Fairies of Nidlongdir, in the hope that it will help ease the pain and loss you may feel meeting your obligations as queen and wife. I have included a painting of me holding you, my beloved new born daughter, in the hope that it will help you to remember where you came from! Please forgive your mother and father for letting you take on the heavy burden it is to step into the shoes of a queen in a foreign city!

Blessings of the Stars,

Your loving mother,

 Lady Svana

This was the most exiting document I had come across for a long time! Queen Agrafina's journal reveals many new facts about her and the history of Nidlongdir, and perhaps it will get some of the fairies of Leafenheim city to rebel against their current lifestyle. I am very thankful that Faezine has allowed me to publish this Journal in its full length in the next coming issues, because it is with a great deal of risk to me, as well as our much beloved and honored editor Be to do so! The Apple Hold Court will consider this journal as treason against King Apple Strong, and as reader of The Faezine, I will have to warn you against bringing prints of this column into Leafenheim City, in case you plan on a visit! You might risk a stay of indefinite time in the Forgotten Trunk!

Fairy Blessings

Nidlongdir Whisperings

My name is Plotka Hildur. I was born inside a pear in Leafenheim City, and currently live in an apartment under the roof of The Nidlongdir Post. I have been working at this newspaper since I was old enough to become a leaf runner. I worked my way up to get a job as reporter, and now I also write for the human magazine Faezine.

I am not yet married. When not working I spend most of my time home in the Dragonian Caves, where I grew up with my foster mother Mama Kauppa, or I go to the Whispering Library to relax.

As a Dragonian fairy I strongly believe in recycling! I support the new Order of a Free Nidlongdir, also called the OFN. This order tries to help abandoned children and trolls in Nidlongdir. I also support the WSPA - World Society for the Protection of Animals.
